OpenVPN Connect is the “official” application from OpenVPN Inc. and is intended to be more user-friendly for VPN users with limited technical expertise. It is therefore less fully feature-rich than the openvpn android app which is designed for more advanced OpenVPN users.

Openvpn for Android Openvpn for Android, a free and open-source client created by Arne Schwarzbe, allows users to connect to any VPN service that uses the OpenVPN protocol. If your device isn’t compatible the pre-configured VPN apps available in the Google Play Store, this is a great alternative. Setup is relatively easy. You just need to import your VPN profile files (the configuration files have an extension of.ovpn) which you can get from the website of your provider or by contacting their live chat support team.

After you’ve transferred your profile to the app, tap on the server to connect. Once connected all Internet traffic is sent through a secure tunnel and sent to the server that was selected by the application. You can view your connection status and details in the Status tab. A kill switch is always turned on by default and will disable your Internet connections when the VPN tunnel is lost.

The app also provides per-app VPN and an on-demand feature that automatically starts a VPN connection whenever the app is used and continues to run even after your device is shut down or switches networks. However, this requires Android 7.0 or higher and could make your battery run more than usual.
